In a statement released on January 7, 2025, ASSOMEG highlighted the significance of Waiya’s appointment by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, acknowledging his tireless efforts in advocating for civil society, transparency, and the empowerment of women.

“Comrade Waiya’s appointment marks a key moment for Kano State, reinforcing his unwavering dedication to democracy and public service,” the statement read.

Waiya, who is the Executive Director of Citizens for Development and Education (CDE) and a founding member of the Kano Civil Society Forum (KCSF), has been a prominent advocate for anti-corruption measures, peacebuilding, and societal reforms across Northern Nigeria.

ASSOMEG expressed confidence that his leadership would enhance the dissemination of accurate, timely information to the people of Kano. “We believe that his wealth of experience will play a crucial role in fostering a transparent relationship between the government and the media, ensuring that citizens are well-informed about the state’s initiatives,” the guild stated.

The association also expressed eagerness to collaborate with the Ministry of Information under Waiya’s guidance to advance the standards of online journalism and keep the public engaged with government policies.
