Arise News, in a statement signed by Hadiza Usman-Ajayi, described Maduagwu, affectionately known as “Sommie,” as “a vibrant voice that engaged and connected with our viewers” and “a cherished member of the Arise News family.”
Born on December 26, 1995, Maduagwu had quickly risen in the media industry for her professionalism, eloquence, and dedication to impactful storytelling. She excelled as a news anchor, reporter, and producer, and her background as a trained lawyer brought depth and analytical insight to her reporting.
Her colleagues at Arise News and peers across the media and legal communities have expressed profound sorrow at her passing, recalling her warmth, energy, and commitment to her work. Tributes continue to pour in, celebrating both her career and the legacy she leaves behind.
The Nigeria Police have launched an investigation into the attack, which has heightened concerns over insecurity in the Federal Capital Territory. Reports indicate that Maduagwu tried to escape through a window when the robbers entered, sustaining severe injuries. She was reportedly alive when authorities arrived, but delayed medical assistance due to a police vehicle lacking fuel prevented timely treatment.
Her family, friends, and colleagues are mourning the loss of a bright and talented journalist, with funeral arrangements expected to be announced soon.
