The victims, identified as Rev. Ernest Okafor, Ogbuka Fabian, Nwamma Philip, Okechukwu Obadiegwu, Obalem Emmanuel, and Obiorah David, were reportedly on their way from Onitsha, Anambra State, to resume academic activities after the court externship break when they were seized by suspected gunmen in a region notorious for attacks on travelers.
The students were expected to resume on Monday, July 28, 2025, as the Yola campus reopened. However, news of their abduction spread among colleagues on Sunday, July 27, leading to widespread concern.
Sources at the Yola campus revealed that the kidnappers had contacted the families and classmates of the victims, demanding N20 million per student. One of the victims reportedly picked a call under duress, confirmed the abduction, and shouted out the ransom demand before the line disconnected.
Fellow students initially dismissed the reports until multiple calls to the victims’ phones went unanswered or were switched off. The situation became clearer when a classmate in Bayelsa State, who had earlier been informed by the wife of one of the victims, confirmed the kidnapping.
Speaking to journalists, police spokesperson Yahaya Suleiman said the command was aware of the case and was working in collaboration with the Benue State Police Command and other security agencies to ensure the safe rescue of the students.
This is not the first time Nigerian Law School students have been kidnapped. In 2022, two students from the Agbani campus in Enugu State were abducted while visiting the local market.
