A strange illness has reportedly claimed the lives of five students at Kebbi State University of Science and Technology, Aliero (KSUSTA), sparking concerns among students and staff.

Although the university has yet to release an official statement, students who spoke anonymously revealed that four students died last week under unclear circumstances, with another death recorded today, Vanguard reports.

While officials from the World Health Organization (WHO) recently visited the university for a meningitis awareness campaign, there is no confirmation that the disease is responsible for the fatalities.

The university’s registrar, Maimaru Alhaji Tilli, confirmed the deaths of four students but stated that the cause remains unknown. He also acknowledged overcrowding in student accommodations as a concern and disclosed that the university had sought permission from the Ministry of Higher Education to temporarily shut down. However, approval has yet to be granted.

Meanwhile, the Students’ Union Government (SUG) has written to the administration, urging the immediate closure of the institution to prevent further casualties.
