The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a heat stress alert for residents in 19 states, the Southeast, and coastal regions, cautioning them about the risks posed by rising temperatures and high humidity levels.

In a statement released yesterday, NiMet highlighted that the affected areas include parts of the Northcentral and eastern regions, with states such as Kebbi, Niger, and Kwara among those expected to experience extreme heat conditions. Several states in the Southwest and other vulnerable locations are also at risk.

The agency predicted that the heatwave would persist for the next three to four days, leading to increased thermal discomfort. It warned that prolonged exposure to excessive heat could result in fatigue, irritability, reduced concentration, and decreased productivity.

To minimize health risks, NiMet advised residents to stay cool by using fans or air conditioning, wear light and breathable clothing, and drink adequate water to stay hydrated. The agency also recommended avoiding direct sun exposure during peak hours and using protective measures such as hats, sunglasses, and sunscreen.
