The House of Representatives has directed the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) to block access to pornographic websites in the country. This decision was made during a plenary session on Tuesday in Abuja following a motion presented by Rep. Dalhatu Tafoki.

Tafoki, in his motion titled “Need to Block Internet Websites Hosting Pornographic Contents and Sanction Defaulting Internet Service Providers (ISPs),” raised concerns about the increasing exposure to cyber pornography and its negative effects on individuals and society. He argued that Nigeria, a country with strong religious and moral values, should take decisive action to restrict access to such content, as several other nations have done.

The lawmaker warned that viewing pornographic material could lead to moral decay, deception in marriages, increased cases of adultery and prostitution, and the promotion of unrealistic expectations that might result in dangerous behaviors. He also cited experts in psychology and sociology who have linked exposure to such content with adverse mental and social consequences.

Following deliberations, the House adopted the motion and mandated its Committees on Communications and Legislative Compliance to oversee its implementation. The committees were instructed to report back within four weeks for further legislative action.
