The faction of the Rivers State House of Assembly led by Martin Amaewhule has issued a 48-hour deadline to Governor Siminalayi Fubara to present the 2025 appropriation bill.

This demand came during their plenary session on Monday, amid the ongoing political tension between Fubara and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike.
The state legislature remains divided, with the Amaewhule-led group backing Wike, while another faction, led by Victor Oko-Jumbo, aligns with Governor Fubara. In January 2025, the Oko-Jumbo faction passed the 2025 budget, which the governor subsequently signed into law. However, the Amaewhule faction is now insisting that the governor formally present the bill before them, further intensifying the power struggle within the assembly.
Meanwhile, Governor Fubara has announced that the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) will organize fresh elections for local government councils in compliance with recent Supreme Court judgments. While expressing reservations about the court’s rulings, he affirmed his administration’s commitment to the rule of law.
As a temporary measure, he directed Heads of Local Government Administration to assume leadership in the state’s 23 LGAs until new elections are conducted.
