Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, has announced plans to conduct fresh local government elections following Supreme Court rulings.

In a statewide broadcast on Sunday, Fubara said his administration would study and implement the judgments once the certified true copies are received by March 7, 2025. Meanwhile, he directed Heads of Local Government Administration to take over the 23 local government areas until the elections are held. Outgoing chairmen must hand over by March 3, 2025.
The governor urged residents to remain calm and continue their daily activities as the state prepares for the elections.
This follows the Supreme Court’s nullification of the October 5, 2024, local government election conducted by the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission. The court, in a ruling delivered on Friday, declared the election invalid for grossly violating the Electoral Act. Justice Jamilu Tukur held that the commission breached Section 150 of the Act by continuing voter registration after announcing the election date.
