A newborn baby was found dead inside a carton near a drainage system in Tudun Tagarji in Kano State.

The tragic discovery was made by members of the Operation Zaman Lafiya vigilante group during a routine patrol in the early hours of Saturday.

Commander Rabiu Sulaiman, who leads the vigilante team, said they found the carton around 2 a.m. and initially feared it might contain something dangerous. However, upon closer examination, they were met with the heartbreaking sight of a lifeless infant.

Following the discovery, the vigilantes promptly alerted community leaders and reported the incident to the police. Authorities instructed them to take the baby’s remains to a hospital, where medical personnel confirmed the infant had passed away. The vigilantes later ensured the baby was given a proper burial in accordance with Islamic rites.

Commander Sulaiman used the incident to call for greater community vigilance and responsibility. He urged parents to closely monitor their children, particularly young women, to prevent cases of unwanted pregnancies that could lead to such tragic outcomes.

He stressed that abandoning newborns goes against Islamic teachings and emphasized the need for collective efforts to prevent similar occurrences.
