The Kano State Government, through the Kano State Agro-pastoral Development Project (KSADP), has completed the construction of 20 public slaughter houses across the state, totaling over N1.5 billion.
The slaughter houses are located in Dawakin Tofa, Kunchi, Bichi, Gezawa, Tudun Wada, Kura, Rano, Bebeji, Wudil, Doguwa, Gabasawa, Gaya, Sumaila, Takai, Kabo, Shanono, Karaye, Kiru, and Gwarzo local government areas.

KSADP, funded by the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB), the Lives and Livelihoods Funds (LLF), and the state government, aims to ensure better meat safety and reduce the spread of animal-related diseases.
The State Project Coordinator, Ibrahim Garba Muhammad, shared this during a stakeholders meeting at the Global Luxury Suites in Kano, discussing strategies for the efficient management, sustainability, and public health compliance of the slaughter houses.
“The objective of this intervention is to guarantee the safety of meat, monitor animal diseases, and control the spread of zoonotic diseases that impact public health,” Muhammad said. He also stressed the importance of immediately utilizing the facilities to prevent neglect or theft.
Sani Rabi’u Muhammad, the Senior Special Assistant to the governor on Abattoirs, emphasized that the meeting was convened to discuss strategies for preventing dilapidation and theft of the new facilities.
He added, “The focus is to ensure the operational success of these slaughter houses.”
Sarkin Fawar Kano, Alhaji Isyaku Alin Muri, thanked the Kano state government, IsDB, and LLF for the monumental project. He described the slaughter houses as a significant step forward for meat processing in Kano.
Dr. Farouk Ahmad Kurawa, Managing Director of the Kano State Agricultural and Rural Development Authority (KNARDA), urged butchers in the state to adopt best global practices for improved industry standards.
The meeting concluded with decisions to immediately begin operations at the slaughter houses, address minor repairs and replace vandalized facilities.
Local agricultural departments were tasked with collaborating with stakeholders to ensure the successful implementation of the project.
