A Kano State High Court has sentenced five men to death for the brutal murder of 67-year-old Dahare Abubakar, who was stabbed to death after being accused of witchcraft.

The incident occurred on November 15, 2023, in Dadin Kowa Village, Wudil Local Government Area. The convicted individuals-Da’luta Ibrahim, Abdulaziz Yahaya, Faisal Yahaya, Ibrahim Abdu, and Ayuba Abdulrahman-were found guilty of culpable homicide.

The prosecution revealed that the defendants conspired to kill the victim, following her to a farm where they attacked her with dangerous weapons. Abubakar was rushed to Wudil General Hospital, where she was declared dead.

In court, the prosecution presented four witnesses and two critical pieces of evidence, including the defendants’ extra-judicial statements and a medical report confirming the victim’s cause of death.

Despite their denials, the court was satisfied that the prosecution had proven their case under Section 221(a) of the Penal Code Laws of Kano State, 1991.

Justice Usman Na’abba, who delivered the ruling, stated that the evidence provided was conclusive, leading to the imposition of the death sentence. Meanwhile, Nabi’a Ibrahim, the sixth defendant, was acquitted due to insufficient evidence linking her to the crime.
