The Police Service Commission has ordered the mandatory retirement of senior police officers who have either served for over 35 years or reached the age of 60.

This decision was made during the Commission’s first extraordinary meeting of 2025, chaired by retired Deputy Inspector General Hashimu Argungu.

The meeting, which also included key officials such as retired Supreme Court Justice Adamu Paul Galumje and Commission Secretary Chief Onyemuchi Nnamani, focused on aligning the police force with public service regulations. According to Ikechukwu Ani, the Commission’s spokesperson, the decision complies with the Public Service Rule No. 020908, which stipulates retirement after 35 years of service or upon reaching the age of 60.

Previously, the Commission had approved a policy that allowed police officers’ appointment dates to match their enlistment dates. However, following a review, the Commission determined that this policy conflicted with public sector service merger principles and violated established retirement rules. As a result, the Commission has decided to enforce retirement strictly in line with public service regulations.

The decision has been communicated to the Inspector General of Police for immediate implementation.
