Speaking at a national conference on strengthening democracy in Nigeria, organized by the African Centre for Leadership, Strategy, and Development in Abuja, Amaechi warned that politicians in the country are willing to take extreme measures to maintain control, even at the expense of public demands.

Amaechi highlighted past events in both Nigeria and Ghana, where politicians went to great lengths to secure electoral victories. He pointed out the persistence of those in power, stating, “No one in power is willing to give it up freely,” emphasizing the need for political vigilance among Nigerians.

Encouraging citizens to take an active role in seeking change, Amaechi advised that if Nigerians want a shift in leadership, they must take proactive steps, saying, “If you want a pastor as president, go and get one.”

Reflecting on his role during the 2015 presidential election, he credited the APC’s success to the party’s unwavering commitment to defending its mandate. He recalled that President Goodluck Jonathan conceded defeat because the APC was determined to ensure the victory was preserved.

Amaechi called on Nigerians to adopt a similar determination in future elections to secure the changes they desire.
