Hon. Lawan Husseini, the House Majority Leader, explained that the proposed corps would complement the police in maintaining law and order while tackling crimes such as phone snatching, thuggery, and illicit drug sales.
The outfit will have the authority to carry weapons, make arrests, and transfer suspects to the police for prosecution.
The bill proposes that the security corps be led by a commander-general and overseen by a council composed of individuals known for their integrity. The initiative draws inspiration from similar security structures in southern states, such as Amotekun, to enhance internal security efforts.
Alongside the security corps bill, the assembly also advanced three other bills to the second reading stage: the Kano State Printing Corporation Bill 2025, the Kano State Electricity Bill 2025, and the Kano State Signage and Advertisement (Establishment) Bill 2025. The signage bill, in particular, seeks to regulate billboard advertisements in line with Sharia law while boosting revenue generation.
The house has adjourned its sitting until February 3, 2025, when the security corps and printing corporation bills will be considered at the committee of the whole house.
