The move follows months of diplomatic tensions after military juntas took control in the three Sahel nations, leading to their suspension from ECOWAS in January 2024.
Despite negotiations, a resolution was not reached, prompting the formal approval of their exit.
In its announcement, ECOWAS confirmed that while the three nations are no longer members, certain privileges will be maintained for their citizens.
Key Arrangements:
- 1. Travel Documents: National passports and identity cards bearing the ECOWAS logo will continue to be recognized until further notice.
- 2. Trade and Investment: Goods and services from the three countries will still be treated in accordance with the ECOWAS Trade Liberalization Scheme (ETLS) and investment policy.
- 3. Visa-Free Movement: Citizens of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger will retain their right to visa-free movement, residence, and establishment within ECOWAS member states.
- 4. Support for ECOWAS Officials: The organization will continue to provide full support and cooperation to its officials from the three countries.
These arrangements will remain in place until the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government determines the modalities of future engagement with the three countries.
The Commission has established a structure to facilitate discussions on these modalities with each of the three countries.
