The Association of Mobile Money and Bank Agents in Nigeria (AMMBAN) has raised concerns that Point-of-Sale (POS) operators may be forced to increase their service charges following the Federal Government’s approval of a 50 percent hike in telecommunications tariffs.
Ogungbayi Ganiyu, the National Public Relations Officer of AMMBAN, disclosed this during an interview on Monday.

He highlighted that the tariff increase directly affects their operations, which heavily rely on telecom services, especially data.
“The telecom tariff hike will impact the operations of our members. I am afraid this may also have a multiplier effect on service charges,” Ganiyu said, adding that members are yet to convene a meeting to deliberate on the development.
He also hinted that Point-of-Sale (POS) operators might initially absorb the increased costs, but the long-term effect on service charges cannot be ruled out.
Meanwhile, the National Association of Telecoms Subscribers has announced plans to take legal action against the Federal Government over the tariff hike. The last time telecom tariffs were increased in the country was in 2013.
