The Deputy Chief Whip of the House of Representatives, Adewunmi Onanuga, has passed away.
The House Spokesman, Akin Rotimi, confirmed her death in a statement on Wednesday evening.

“It is with profound sorrow that the House of Representatives announces the passing of Rt Hon Adewunmi Onanuga, who, until her demise, served as the Deputy Chief Whip of the House, representing the Ikenne/Sagamu/Remo North Federal Constituency of Ogun State. She passed away earlier today, January 15, 2025, after a brief illness,” the statement read.
Onanuga, born on December 2, 1965, was a dedicated public servant who made notable contributions to Nigerian politics. She was first elected to the House in 2019 under the All Progressives Congress and later became the Chairperson of the House Committee on Women Affairs and Social Development, where she championed policies aimed at empowering women and advancing social welfare.
The statement also noted that she was re-elected in 2023 and appointed as Deputy Chief Whip of the 10th Assembly, where she demonstrated remarkable leadership and commitment to maintaining legislative discipline.
Affectionately referred to as ‘Ijaya,’ Onanuga was respected for her intellect, humility, and passion for excellence. Her legacy of service and commitment to enhancing Nigeria’s political landscape will continue to inspire future generations.
Funeral arrangements will be announced by her family.
