The Garun Malam Local Government Council in Kano State has announced the indefinite closure of the Kwanar Gafan Tomato Market, citing concerns over rising illicit activities, including prostitution, adultery, homosexuality, and other immoral behaviors within and around the market.

The council chairman, Barr. Aminu Salisu Kadawa, confirmed the decision while addressing journalists, stating that all occupants must vacate the market premises by January 1, 2025, warning of strict consequences for non-compliance.

“Given the market’s growing notoriety as a hub for prostitution and other immoral activities, which contradict its intended purpose, it is necessary to close it indefinitely in order to restore sanity,” Kadawa said. “The market has become a haven for criminals, armed robbers, and other wrongdoers.”

Kadawa emphasized that traders and occupants must remove their belongings before the deadline. He also assured that the market would only reopen after a thorough review of its operations and necessary measures are put in place.
