Good approach to humanitarian reporting is a must to Journalist – ICRC

The International Committee of Red Cross (ICRC) has trained Professional Journalists from ten states of the country on Humanitarian Reporting.

The two-day training covers Journalists from Print, Electronic, and Online Media Organisations.

Speaking earlier ICRC Communication Coordinator Abuja Delegation Mr. Robin Waudo said the training was aimed at equipping Journalists with the necessary knowledge of approaching humanitarian reporting.

Waudo added that the engagement would enable the Media Organisations and their representative to share their experiences on humanitarian activity with the people who did get the opportunity to attend.

On her part, Patience Nanklin-Yawus, Communication Field Officer of ICRC Jos-sub-delegation said, no doubt the training would help improve the content of the news reporting of the participants.

Patience maintained that “ICRC will continue to operate base on its seven principles of Humanitarian, Impartial, Neutrality, Independence, Voluntary Service, Unity, and Universality in their activities, with the essence of alleviating the sufferings faced by victims of conflicts.”

A lecturer with Mass Communication Department Bayero University Kano Dr. Bala Muhammad, a facilitator at the training, said Journalists are a very important pillar that would help address the increasing insecurity problem in the country.

Dr. Bala Muhammad appealed to the Journalists to understand the background and nature of every conflict to disseminate it to the larger society.

Muhammad who is a Veteran Journalists said the Government should destroy all the forests as it’s the hideout for bandits and other insurgents groups, ban the importation of motorcycles and hard drugs as the immediate measures to tackle security challenges in the country.

The lecturer urged the Government to do the needful towards implementing his suggestions, which were research products, to help tackle security challenges in the country.
