The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved the renaming of the University of Abuja (UniAbuja) to Yakubu Gowon University, in honor of the former Nigerian Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon.

Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, made the announcement to State House correspondents after the council’s last meeting for 2024 at the Aso Rock Villa in Abuja.

Idris explained, “The third item is that there is also a decision taken by the Federal Executive Council to rename the University of Abuja to honour elder statesman, General Yakubu Gowon. The University of Abuja will, henceforth, be called Yakubu Gowon University.”

He clarified that the renaming process will be submitted to the National Assembly for legislative approval, as FEC’s decision now paves the way for the necessary steps to finalize the change.

Additionally, Idris informed that the council would begin its recess from December 18, 2024, and return on January 6, 2025.
