The Kano State Government has disclosed plans to reintroduce the daily tax on tricycle drivers, a policy initially implemented by the administration of former Governor Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje.
Daily News 24 reports that this was revealed by the Commissioner for Transport, Muhammad Ibrahim Diggol, during an interview on Hikima Radio’s Hannu Daya programme.

Diggol explained that the decision to revisit the tax aligns with the government’s efforts to streamline the transport sector and enhance revenue generation.
“The reintroduction of this tax is essential for maintaining order in the transport sector and ensuring that resources are effectively managed,” he said.
The administration of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf had earlier hinted at reviving the tax but paused implementation due to undisclosed reasons.
Under the previous arrangement, tricycle drivers were required to pay N100 daily whenever they worked. However, this policy was met with resistance, often leading to confrontations between drivers and officials of the Kano State Road Transport Authority (KAROTA), who were tasked with enforcement.
Diggol noted that the government is committed to addressing concerns raised in the past to ensure a smoother implementation this time around.
This move by the Kano State Government is coming on the heels of President Bola Tinubu’s recent push for tax reforms.
On October 3, Tinubu sent four key tax reform bills to the National Assembly for consideration. These include the Nigeria Tax Bill, the Nigeria Tax Administration Bill, the Nigeria Revenue Service Establishment Bill, and the Joint Revenue Board Establishment Bill.
