The Speaker of the Kano State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Jibril Ismail Falgore, on Wednesday, stepped aside to allow a 15-year-old student, Muhammad Isa, preside over a special plenary session in commemoration of World Children’s Day.

The session, held in collaboration with UNICEF’s Kano Field Office, saw children from various schools take over legislative seats to discuss issues affecting their welfare.

Presiding over the proceedings, Isa called for the renovation of public schools, provision of instructional materials, and the recruitment of qualified teachers to improve education in the state.

He also emphasized the need for professional educators to lead the Ministry of Education and its parastatals. “We urge the government to appoint qualified personnel to effectively manage the education sector and address children’s needs,” Isa said.

Responding on behalf of Speaker Falgore, the Deputy Clerk of the House, Alhaji Nasiru Magaji, assured the children of the Assembly’s commitment to advancing their welfare through legislation. “Nigerian children possess potential that, if properly harnessed, will create a better society. We are actively working to enact and implement laws that will enhance their lives,” he stated.

UNICEF’s Communication Specialist, Mr. Samuel Kaalu, commended the Assembly’s proactive efforts, describing the event as a significant step toward addressing children’s needs. “This session highlights the importance of involving children in policymaking and prioritizing their welfare,” Kaalu noted.

The event underscored the need for collaborative efforts to ensure that children in Kano and across Nigeria have access to quality education and opportunities to thrive.
