The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) in Kano State has announced an indefinite suspension of medical services at Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital, effective from 12 noon today, November 6, 2024.

In a statement signed by NMA Kano’s Public Relations Officer, Dr. Muhammad Aminu Musa, the association explained that the decision follows the Kano State Government’s inaction in response to a 48-hour ultimatum issued after a female doctor was allegedly assaulted at the hospital’s Emergency Paediatric Unit.

The statement highlighted that an investigation by the Ministry of Health confirmed the doctor’s professionalism in handling the incident, and it found her without fault. Despite this, “no action has been taken against the Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs, who led the assault and harassment,” Dr. Musa stated.

The NMA Kano has outlined three core demands: the immediate dismissal of the Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs, adequate staffing and resource allocation, and strengthened security measures across all hospital units to ensure the safety of healthcare workers and patients. “The NMA remains committed to upholding medical care and patient safety standards, seeking justice and reforms to protect healthcare professionals,” Dr. Musa added.

Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has previously shown dedication to healthcare improvements in Kano State, exemplified by the renovation and upgrading of Hasiya Bayero Pediatric Hospital, which was granted executive approval to offer free healthcare to children. However, the NMA stressed that immediate action is necessary to address their concerns and foster a safe working environment for medical personnel.
