19 traditional rulers from Sokoto State’s Sabon Birni Local Government Area have resigned, citing neglect by state authorities as the central factor behind their decision.

The resignations include prominent figures like the Sarkin Gabas na Sabon Birni and the Magajin Dawaki, as reported by BBC Hausa.

One of the district heads, Abdullahi Muhammad Bawa, shared that he felt pressured to step down after receiving threats from the state government for visiting a senator who had supported efforts to improve conditions in Eastern Sokoto’s impoverished communities. Bawa noted, “I could no longer fulfill my responsibilities as a leader due to the prevailing circumstances.”

Alhaji Lawali Shuaibu, the District Head of Takasaba, voiced additional concerns regarding rising insecurity in the area. According to Shuaibu, terrorist activities have kept farmers from accessing their lands, compounding the challenges faced by local residents.

Attempts to obtain comments from Ibrahim Dade, Sokoto’s Commissioner for Local Government, were unsuccessful at the time of this report.
