Professor Iliyasu Usman has been appointed as an Imam at the Abuja National Mosque, making him the first Igbo Muslim to hold this position.

Usman, who is also the first Professor of Arabic in Igboland, will join the ranks of the three existing Imams at the mosque and support the two active Imams, Prof. Ibrahim Makari and Prof. Muhammad Kabir, in the rotational conduct of Jumm’at and daily congregational prayers.

Usman delivered his inaugural khutbah (sermon) on friday, marking a significant moment for the Muslim community in Nigeria. The fourth Imam, Sheikh Ahmad Onilewura from the Southwest, has not been leading prayers for some time due to health issues.

This appointment has been widely celebrated, particularly by the South East Muslim Organisation of Nigeria (SEMON), which views it as a testament to Usman’s dedication to Islamic scholarship and leadership.

In a statement, SEMON praised the inclusiveness of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), commending the leadership of President-General and Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar. The organization emphasized that Usman’s appointment is not only a personal milestone but also a divine duty to lead the Muslim community in worship and service to Allah.

SEMON’s statement reads, “We, the South East Muslim Organisation of Nigeria (SEMON), extend our heartfelt congratulations to Professor Iliyasu Usman on your recent appointment as an Imam of the National Mosque, Abuja. This prestigious role is not only a testament to your unwavering dedication and scholarly excellence but also a divine blessing and responsibility to lead the Ummah in worship and service to Allah.

“We pray that Allah (SWT) grants you the wisdom, strength, and steadfastness to discharge this sacred duty with diligence, integrity, and humility. May your leadership inspire unity, peace, and piety.”
