The Kano State Anti-corruption and Public Complaints Commission has launched an investigation into an alleged N1.5 billion fraud linked to the state’s foreign scholarship scheme.

Two top officials from the Ministry of Higher Education are currently being interrogated over discrepancies surrounding 1,001 students who were reported to have been studying in India and Kenya under the scheme.

The Kano State Government had announced it was sponsoring 1,001 postgraduate students for master’s degrees in India and Uganda, a program initiated by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf. The scheme was originally introduced by former Governor Rabi’u Kwankwaso.

Governor Yusuf recently held a farewell dinner for the first batch of 550 students, commending Kwankwaso for the initiative. However, it has now been revealed that only 418 students were actually sent abroad, raising concerns about the fate of the remaining students.

Confirming the investigation, the Commission’s Public Relations Officer, Kabiru A. Kabiru, stated, “We have commenced an intensive investigation to find out the truth of the matter, and whoever is found to have been involved will be prosecuted, no matter his position.”
