The Kano State Independent Electoral Commission (KANSIEC) has announced a reduction in the fees for nomination forms for local government elections, following a court order.

The decision was made public during a press briefing held at KANSIEC’s headquarters in Kano on Tuesday.

KANSIEC Chairman, Professor Sani Lawal Malumfashi, explained that candidates for chairmanship and vice-chairmanship positions will now pay N9 million, while those aspiring for councillor positions will be charged N4 million. “We are law-abiding. The new fees are set at N9 million for the chairmanship and vice-chairmanship, while councillors will pay N4 million,” he stated.

The fee reduction comes in response to a court ruling that favored three political parties who had challenged the initial nomination fee of N10 million for chairmanship positions. Despite other Nigerian states charging up to N20 million for similar positions, KANSIEC complied with the court’s directive to lower the fees.

Professor Malumfashi also acknowledged the participation of political parties, including the All Progressives Congress (APC), in the upcoming elections. “They have realized we are not here to joke. If you win, you improve. It’s a win-win game,” he said, stressing the importance of upholding democratic principles.

Additionally, he urged the media to play a critical role in supporting the electoral process, describing them as vital stakeholders in ensuring transparency.
