The Chairman of the Kano State Independent Electoral Commission (KANSIEC), Prof. Sani Lawan, has clarified that he is not affiliated with any political party in the state.

He made this statement on Thursday during a stakeholder meeting where election guidelines and timetables for the upcoming Local Government election, scheduled for November 30, 2024, were presented to political parties.

Responding to allegations suggesting that he was a member of a specific political party, Prof. Lawan firmly denied the claims, stating, “I am not a registered member of any political party, and I refused to be a registered member of any political party because of my standing as a social critic and comrade in the struggle.”

Prof. Lawan emphasized that the commission is committed to conducting an election free from any interference, cautioning political parties against engaging in electoral malpractice. “Election officials will never rig elections but the politicians are those who rig elections,” he added.

The Chairman also announced the costs for election forms, with the Chairmanship form set at N10 million and the councillorship form at N5 million. Additionally, candidates interested in the Chairmanship seat must be at least 30 years old, while those vying for councillorship must be at least 25 years old.
