The Jigawa State Independent Electoral Commission (JISIEC) has announced that local government elections will be held on October 5, 2024.

This decision was revealed by the Chairman of the Commission, Alhaji Awwal Muhammad, during a stakeholders’ meeting in Dutse on Friday.

Muhammad affirmed the commission’s commitment to ensuring free, fair, and credible elections across the state’s 27 local government areas. He recalled that the local council elections had been postponed from June 2024 to June 2025 due to amendments in the state electoral law.

“However, it’s my belief that you are aware of the recent Supreme Court judgement directing all state governments to put in place democratically elected local government councils in their respective states, with immediate effect,” Muhammad stated.

In response to the Supreme Court’s directive, JISIEC decided to revert to its original schedule and requested a re-amendment of the state electoral law to align with the judgement. Consequently, the new date for the local government elections has been set for Saturday, October 5, 2024.

Muhammad called on security agencies, traditional and religious leaders, political parties, organizations, women’s groups, youth leaders, the media, and community groups to support the commission in achieving the goal of a successful election.

Reiterating the commission’s dedication to conducting credible elections, Muhammad expressed gratitude to stakeholders for their continuous support in ensuring the elections are free and fair.

Gov. Yusuf pledges free, fair, and credible LG elections in Kano

Earlier, Daily News 24 reported how Governor Yusuf announced his administration’s commitment to conducting free, fair, and credible local government elections in Kano.

This declaration was made during a meeting with stakeholders and the leadership of the ruling New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) at Africa House, Government House, Kano.

Governor Yusuf highlighted the administration’s readiness to hold the elections, aligning with the recent Supreme Court judgement that affirmed financial autonomy for local governments. He emphasized the government’s dedication to upholding the rule of law, financial prudence, accountability, and transparency at all levels of governance.

“Our administration has allowed the previous Local Government Executive Councils in the 44 LGAs to finish their tenure despite pressure from within. This is out of respect we have for the rule of law,” Governor Yusuf stated. He added, “So, our respect for accountability and consideration of the recent Supreme Court judgment trigger our readiness to conduct council elections.”
