The Police Command in Niger has confirmed the abduction by gunmen of a driver with a construction firm on Lambata-Izom road in Gurara Local Government Area of the state.

The Commissioner of Police, Mr Monday Bala-Kuryas, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) by telephone that the attack occurred at about 3p.m. on Monday.

He said that a combined security team of the police, soldiers and vigilantes engaged the gunmen in a two-hour battle.

He also said that the gunmen abandoned four motorcycles they had earlier stolen.

“Aggressive manhunt of the criminals has been mounted, we appeal to residents of the area to assist in providing useful information that could lead to the arrest of the fleeing gunmen.

“We also appeal to residents not to hesitate to report any person or group of people with gun shot wounds to the nearest security outfits for necessary action,” he said.
