Afghanistan on Wednesday launched the construction work for a water diversion dam in southern province of Kandahar.

In a statement, the government said with a total cost of 14 million afghani (136,000 U.S. dollars), the Mianko Water Dam on the outskirts of provincial capital Kandahar city would help irrigate agricultural lands and gardens.

The statement added that the dam would also help to control the flow of seasonal floods to Kandahar and neighboring villages.

According to the statement, the dam was designed to be 195 meters wide and 10 meters tall and it would benefit the province famous for fruit production.

The local government said it would continue to build water canals and dams in Kandahar in an effort to boost local agricultural production.
