Operatives of the Western Nigeria Security Network, WNSN, involved in the inter-border joint patrol within the southwest states, have rescued 12 persons who were victims of highway armed robbers on Friday.

The victims, who were passengers of a commercial bus and the driver and conductor of a J5 van conveying goods, were waylaid along Akure/Ilesa highway by the gang of robbers.

Following the rescue of the passengers, the Amotekun Corps also recovered goods worth N50 million that were being conveyed by a J5 van.

The bus was hauling goods worth N50m from Lagos State to Kaduna State when the armed robbers struck and attacked it.

Disclosing this during the weekend at the command’s headquarters in Akure, the Ondo State capital, the Amotekun Commander, Chief Adetunji Adeleye, said the robbers escaped after engaging the Amotekun Corps in a gun duel.

Adeleye disclosed that his men rushed to the robbery scene when they heard sporadic gunshots fired by the robbers into the air.

According to the Amotekun boss, following the exchange of gunfire, the robbers abandoned the bus. They ran into the forest, after which operatives of the corps combed the bush where passengers who had fled into the bush were rescued.

“We have contacted the owner of the goods, and in no time, his goods would be sent back to him.

“This is part of Phase 7 of Operation Cleanup and a word of assurance that anytime, any day, that the New year festivity would be crime-free.”
