A late-night fire has destroyed parts of Rogo General Hospital in Kano State, forcing a chaotic evacuation of patients and leaving the community without a functional health facility.
The incident occurred on Thursday, November 11, when flames erupted in the hospital’s female ward and spread rapidly, consuming vital sections of the building. Staff, patients, and nearby residents immediately rushed to save those trapped inside.

Muhammad Sani, who lives near the hospital, rushed to the scene after noticing heavy smoke and saw patients being carried to an open field opposite the building, with elderly patients and women among those evacuated. Ibrahim Abdallah, visiting his grandmother at the time, observed that smoke quickly filled the ward, and both staff and residents worked together to move the most vulnerable patients and contain the fire.
Although officials have yet to confirm the exact cause, early checks show that key wards and storage areas were completely destroyed, crippling the hospital’s operations.
Reacting to the incident, Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf expressed sympathy for residents of Rogo Local Government Area. His spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, described the fire as deeply saddening, noting that hospitals serve as critical lifelines for communities and must always remain functional and safe.
The governor directed an immediate assessment of the damage and ordered full renovation and rehabilitation of the affected sections. He assured the people of Rogo of his administration’s commitment to strengthening healthcare facilities across all 44 local government areas of the state.
