Senator Kawu Sumaila has officially launched a large-scale irrigation scheme in Kano South, marking the first phase of a major initiative aimed at transforming agriculture and supporting rural communities across the district.

According to a statement signed by Abbas Adam Abbas, Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity to Senator Kawu Sumaila, the programme seeks to enhance food production, strengthen rural development, and promote economic growth in line with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

Speaking at the flag-off ceremony, Sen Kawu Sumaila described the turnout of beneficiaries as impressive and hailed the project as a historic milestone for Kano South. He acknowledged the contributions of Hon. Kabiru Alhassan Rurum, other federal lawmakers from the district, and APC leaders in the state.

He revealed that over 10,000 farmers and households will benefit from this first phase, which is designed to improve irrigation capacity, mechanization, and mobility in rural communities.

The equipment distributed includes 5,500 pumping machines, 5,500 tube wells, 1,450 hand planters, 20 units of 7.5HP mini tillers, 20 units of 12HP hand tractors, 20 Normant harrows for 18HP hand tractors, 20 harrows for 12HP hand tractors, 1,450 sprayers, 165 motorcycles, and 165 tricycles.

Sen Kawu Sumaila explained that the wider irrigation scheme also involves rehabilitating three major dams, opening new irrigation sectors, constructing rural access roads, and installing drainage and erosion-control systems to safeguard farmland.

He added that the project aims to reduce poverty, tackle insecurity, and bridge the rural–urban development gap by promoting sustainable livelihoods and supporting self-employment. He assured residents that subsequent phases of the distribution are already underway and will be rolled out soon.

The Senator expressed gratitude to the Ecology Office under Mrs. Aisha Ndako for designing and supervising the project and thanked President Tinubu for supporting the initiative. He also commended all partners whose dedication made the programme possible.

In his remarks, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, praised Sen Kawu Sumaila’s efforts and pledged to brief the President on the progress achieved under the Renewed Hope Agenda.
