Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has urged the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) to extend its regulatory oversight to online radio and television platforms to curb the growing spread of unverified and inflammatory content in the digital space.

The call was made during the Africast 2025 Conference held in Lagos, where media professionals, policymakers, and stakeholders gathered to deliberate on emerging trends in the broadcast industry.

In a statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Mustapha Muhammad, Governor Yusuf, represented by his Director-General on Media and Publicity, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, expressed concern over the misuse of online broadcasting platforms, especially those spreading divisive content on religion and politics.

He warned that such practices threaten peace, unity, and national security, stressing the need for proactive regulation.
“The unregulated online broadcasting environment has become a breeding ground for misinformation and hate speech, particularly on sensitive issues like religion and politics. It is time for the NBC to take proactive measures to ensure accountability and ethical standards in the digital media space,” he said.

Responding to the Governor’s position, the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Information commended the call, revealing that the National Assembly is already considering an amendment to the NBC Act.

The amendment, which has passed first reading in the Senate, aims to empower the Commission with the legal authority to regulate online broadcast media and ensure that digital broadcasters adhere to the same ethical standards as traditional media.
