Bayelsa State Governor, Douye Diri, has announced his resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), deepening the wave of defections rocking the opposition party.

The announcement was made on Wednesday at the Executive Council chamber of Government House, Yenagoa. Information from government sources indicated that the Speaker of the Bayelsa State House of Assembly, Rt Hon Abraham Ngobere, and 18 PDP lawmakers also withdrew their membership from the party.

Governor Diri’s resignation came less than 24 hours after his Enugu State counterpart, Peter Mbah, defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). Although Diri has not declared his next political move, the development further weakens the PDP, which now controls only eight states nationwide.

Confirming the governor’s decision, his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Daniel Alabrah, posted the development on his verified social media account.

Meanwhile, former senator Ben Murray-Bruce, who represented Bayelsa East Senatorial District, also announced his resignation from the PDP on Wednesday. In a statement shared on Facebook, he praised President Bola Tinubu’s administration, describing it as reform-driven and committed to rebuilding the economy and infrastructure.

Murray-Bruce stated that he was joining the APC “not for politics, but for progress,” expressing confidence that Nigeria would witness “phenomenal growth” under Tinubu’s leadership.
