Sunusi’s father, Abubakar Musa Gabari, said his son went swimming in the pond around 5 pm but did not return home, prompting a search involving community members and security agencies.

The NSCDC confirmed that Sunusi’s body was recovered from the pond around 9 am on Wednesday, October 1, 2025. Before the discovery, his shoes and trousers had been found abandoned near the riverbank the previous day. The NSCDC stated that the boy’s body bore no signs of injury and was handed over to his family for burial according to Islamic rites.

ASC Mahmud urged parents, guardians, and community leaders to advise children and youths against swimming in open water bodies to prevent similar tragedies. He emphasized that the NSCDC remains dedicated to protecting lives and property across Jigawa State.
