The Academic Staff Union of Universities has given the Federal Government a 14-day ultimatum to address its demands.

ASUU president, Professor Chris Piwuna, confirmed the development in Abuja, warning that the union may begin a two-week warning strike if the government fails to act within the specified period. He noted that the action could escalate into a total and indefinite strike if the issues remain unresolved.
The union is pushing for the renegotiation of the 2009 agreement, the release of adequate revitalization funds for universities, payment of outstanding salary arrears owed to lecturers, and the establishment of a sustainable funding model for the tertiary education system.
In reaction, the Federal Ministry of Education has set up a committee headed by the Permanent Secretary, Abel Enitan, to review ASUU’s demands and come up with recommendations to guarantee stability in the university sector. The findings of the committee are still awaited, leaving the future of the talks uncertain.
