The Kano State Government has advised against moves to create a parallel elders’ council in the state, following recent remarks by the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) on establishing a similar body.

Daily News 24 reports that this is contained in a statement signed by the Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Comrade Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya on Wednesday. He explained that Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf had in January 2024 already announced the formation of the Kano Elders Advisory Council (KEAC) and said efforts are ongoing to finalize its institutional framework ahead of its official inauguration.
The commissioner noted that the KEAC was designed to bring together respected figures such as former governors, deputy governors, speakers, legislators, retired judges, past heads of service, senior religious scholars, business leaders, traditional rulers, and retired security chiefs.
According to him, the council would operate as a neutral, apolitical platform, relying on collective wisdom and experience to guide government and foster inclusive development.
“The initiative is a first of its kind and is meant to serve as a non-partisan advisory body for the benefit of Kano people,” the statement read. “We welcome all individuals, organizations, and groups to align with this existing framework to strengthen its operations and realize its objectives.”
Waiya further assured that the government remains committed to an open-door policy, stressing that partnership and collaboration are key to sustaining peace, progress, and prosperity in the state.
He added that the formal structures of the council will soon be concluded, after which Governor Yusuf will inaugurate its members.
