The Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital (AKTH) has successfully carried out free heart surgeries in Kano through a collaboration with the King Salman Humanitarian Center of Saudi Arabia and the Al-Balsam Medical Organization.

Head of the hospital’s Cardiac Surgery Unit, Dr. Jamil Ismail Ahmad, said the intervention was a lifeline for patients who could not afford the high cost of treatment. According to him, such surgeries typically cost between N8 million and N10 million locally, while abroad, patients would pay over N25 million.
He explained that those selected for the procedures underwent a strict screening process, with priority given to patients whose conditions were less complicated to ensure a higher success rate. Dr. Ahmad further noted that the partnership is not only saving lives but also enhancing the training of medical personnel and boosting the hospital’s capacity to deliver specialized care.
Leader of the Saudi medical team, Dr. Abdullah, highlighted the challenges faced in developing countries where many patients seek medical attention only after their health deteriorates. He stressed that this often increases the risk of death from heart-related complications.
So far, five patients have successfully undergone surgery at AKTH, with more scheduled to receive treatment in the coming days.
