Senator Sulaiman Abdurrahman Kawu Sumaila, representing Kano South at the National Assembly, has pledged greater support for irrigation farmers in his constituency as part of efforts to boost dry-season agriculture.

The senator made this known during an inspection visit to more than 5,000 irrigation pumps he procured for distribution across the 16 local government areas of Kano South. In addition, over 5,000 wells have been constructed to provide reliable water for irrigation.

The intervention is designed with a system where each pump and well will serve at least three farmers. With this arrangement, no fewer than 15,000 farmers are expected to directly benefit from the initiative.

Kawu Sumaila explained that the programme will help strengthen food production, generate employment opportunities, and improve the local economy.

He stressed that the initiative is aimed at easing the challenges faced by farmers and promoting irrigation farming in Kano South and beyond. With effective cooperation, each facility is expected to serve its target beneficiaries efficiently.

The senator reaffirmed his commitment to supporting farmers, noting that dry-season agriculture remains key to ensuring food security in Nigeria.
