Two senior officials of the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) who were recently arrested by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) have been released after refunding funds they were accused of diverting.

Sources within the commission disclosed that while the two regained their freedom, six other top officials remain in EFCC custody for failing to return the allegedly misappropriated money.

The anti-graft agency had taken into custody at least eight senior NAHCON officials over suspicions of mismanaging funds earmarked for the 2025 Hajj exercise. Investigations into the matter are still ongoing.

This latest probe comes months after a similar case in August 2024, when then-NAHCON Chairman, Jalal Arabi, and Secretary, Abdullahi Kontagora, were detained over allegations of mishandling the N90 billion Hajj subsidy for that year. President Bola Tinubu subsequently relieved Arabi of his position following the development.

The EFCC has yet to make an official statement on the outcome of its current investigation.
