The father of the children, Malam Yusuf Maitama, recounted his ordeal, explaining that the tragedy began when his youngest child, who was under five, developed fever and sore throat before passing away, Daily Post reports.
Shortly after, three more of his children exhibited similar symptoms and also died despite efforts to save them.
Only his eldest daughter survived following urgent medical intervention. According to Maitama, the children showed classic signs of diphtheria, including persistent fever, sore throat, and a white patch in the throat.
Health officials later visited the household, disinfected the area, and administered vaccines to children in the neighborhood in a bid to prevent further spread.
The Kano State government said it has designated a special hospital to handle diphtheria cases while ensuring vaccines and treatment remain free for all children. Authorities are urging parents to prioritize immunization and to seek immediate medical help once symptoms are noticed.
