Speaking on the matter for the first time in a statewide broadcast on Monday, Kefas described Alkali’s condition as a human concern rather than a political issue. He urged citizens to show empathy, noting that he was addressing the matter “as a fellow human being guided by faith, morality, and conscience.”
Quoting from both the Bible and the Quran, the governor emphasised the importance of unity and compassion in difficult times. He cited Galatians 6:2 and Surah Al-Ma’idah 5:32 to stress the duty of bearing one another’s burdens. Kefas also appealed for support to Alkali’s family during this period.
While acknowledging that the constitution provides a framework for addressing such situations, the governor maintained that moral responsibility should guide the state’s response.
However, human rights lawyer Barrister Bilyaminu Maihanci cautioned that compassion must not overshadow the rule of law. He urged the governor, the State Executive Council, and the House of Assembly to act in line with Sections 189 and 191 of the Nigerian Constitution to ensure governance remains within legal bounds.
