The Kano State Government has commenced a refresher training programme for more than 72 secondary school teachers on modern fish farming techniques, aiming to equip students with practical skills for self-reliance.

Declaring the training open on Tuesday, the Commissioner for Education, Ali Makoda, said the initiative is part of the government’s broader plan to integrate entrepreneurship into the school system. He explained that by empowering teachers with up-to-date fish farming knowledge, students across the state would be better positioned to explore income-generating opportunities after graduation.

Makoda stressed that vocational skills remain vital to improving young people’s livelihoods, particularly in challenging economic times, and noted that Kano’s large population could drive significant economic growth if given the right tools. He commended Governor Abba Yusuf for supporting the Ministry of Education in delivering on its mandate.

Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Bashir Muhammed, said the government had taken deliberate steps to improve the quality of education, including introducing more practical learning opportunities.

During the programme, participants engaged in hands-on training at newly established fish ponds, gaining first-hand experience in modern aquaculture methods. The state hopes the initiative will not only foster entrepreneurship but also contribute to food security and economic development.
