The spokesperson for the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), Umar Abubakar, confirmed the incident, saying the escapees breached security and attacked staff members before breaking out of the facility.

According to Abubakar, five officers sustained injuries during the incident, with two currently in critical condition and receiving treatment. Seven of the fugitives have since been recaptured, while nine remain at large.

Controller General of Corrections Sylvester Nwakuche visited the centre shortly after the incident and ordered a comprehensive investigation into the escape. He also warned that any staff members found complicit would face disciplinary measures.

A joint manhunt involving the NCoS and other security agencies is ongoing to track down the remaining escapees.

Authorities have appealed to the public to remain calm and report any suspicious movements or sightings to the nearest security post.
