Rep. Abubakar Kabir Abubakar, Chairman of the House Committee on Appropriation, disclosed this while speaking to journalists in Kano. He explained that the initiative is expected to ease the movement of people and goods within the city and create opportunities for commerce.
According to him, the light rail will play a crucial role in reducing transportation difficulties in Kano metropolis and is projected to significantly enhance the state’s economy once completed.
The lawmaker also dismissed claims that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is neglecting northern Nigeria, listing major projects currently underway in the region. These include the near-completion of the Kaduna–Zaria–Kano expressway, the reassigned and progressing Kaduna–Abuja road project, the completed 200-kilometre Kano–Hadejia road, and the over N250 billion Kano northern bypass.
Bichi added that the President’s investments extend beyond infrastructure to health, agriculture, education, and security, underscoring a commitment to balanced national development.
He further revealed that they were in Kano for an APC stakeholders’ meeting to strategise ahead of the 2027 general elections. According to him, Kano gave President Tinubu over 500,000 votes in the last election, the highest in the country and the meeting also served as a show of support for former APC National Chairman Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje, who played a key role in securing PDP-controlled states for the ruling party.
