A fresh leadership crisis has erupted in the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as Nafi’u Bala, a former governorship candidate in Gombe State and ex-national deputy chairman of the party, declared himself interim national chairman.

Addressing journalists during a late-night press briefing in Abuja on Wednesday, Bala accused a faction of the party led by former Senate President David Mark of executing what he described as an “illegal hijack” of the party’s leadership, in violation of its constitution.

The crisis stems from recent restructuring moves within the ADC. On July 2, Ralph Nwosu, a former national chairman, announced the dissolution of the party’s National Working Committee and threw his weight behind an interim leadership reportedly led by David Mark. The restructuring, according to sources, is part of an opposition realignment ahead of the 2027 general elections, with the ADC positioned as a possible coalition platform.

But Bala is pushing back, insisting that his emergence as interim chairman is grounded in the party’s constitution. He called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to recognize him as the legitimate leader of the ADC.

He also warned of impending legal action should the Mark-led leadership fail to step down and return to what he called the constitutional path.
