A heavy downpour in Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State, has left several residents displaced and led to the collapse of eight buildings in the early hours of Wednesday.

The rain, which began around 6:15 a.m. and lasted for three hours, caused serious flooding in multiple communities including Bulumkutu, Abuja, Moduganari, and Ngomari. Families living near riverbanks were among the worst affected, with many forced to flee their homes as floodwaters surged through the area.
One of the residents described how water entered his home in Bulumkutu around 8 a.m., forcing him to evacuate with his family to safety. Aisha Suraju, who runs a provision shop, also lamented the losses she suffered after her goods were soaked and destroyed by the flood.
In response, the Borno State Police Command deployed officers to assist in rescue operations across the affected communities. Police spokesperson, ASP Nahum Daso, confirmed that eight buildings collapsed as a result of the flooding. He, however, noted that there were no reported casualties.
Commissioner of Police, Naziru Abdulmaji, called on residents to remain calm and follow safety guidelines. He further advised parents to prevent children from playing in floodwaters due to potential hazards.
