Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has faulted the All Progressives Congress (APC) over the emergence of Professor Nentawe Yilwatda as the party’s new National Chairman, describing the move as a dangerous signal ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Atiku disclosed this through his Media Adviser, Paul Ibe in an interview with Vanguard in Abuja on Monday.

Atiku, who contested the 2023 presidential election under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), raised concerns about Yilwatda’s past role as head of the Information Technology department at the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). He alleged that the ruling party’s decision to elevate a former electoral official to such a sensitive political position points to a deliberate attempt to influence the outcome of future elections.

He said the APC’s focus appears to be on manipulating the 2027 polls rather than delivering good governance or earning public trust through performance. According to Atiku, the groundwork for rigging is being laid early by installing individuals with technical knowledge of the electoral system in strategic party positions.

The former vice president also emphasized the need for unity among opposition parties, stressing that divisions within the opposition camp would only serve the interests of those bent on retaining power through undemocratic means. He urged political leaders outside the APC to begin building alliances to resist what he sees as an emerging threat to Nigeria’s democratic process.
